Future Fair NYC, an annual art exhibition based in New York City, is preparing to celebrate their 5th anniversary from May 7th-10th. Welcoming a total of 69 exhibitors from the United States and abroad, Future Fair is committed to amplifying the work and meaningful contributions of artists and art business galleries that are changing the culture of art for the better.
“Over the past five years, Future Fair has fostered a community of mutual support, empowering fresh voices in the art industry - from new dealers to new artists to new collectors. We’re proud to collaborate with this year’s cohort of exhibitors for this special edition, driving discoveries that will energize the industry,” Future Fair founders Rachel Mijaries Fick and Rebecca Laliberte said.
Among the artwork being showcased is the work of Mia Pauline Hause, who began incorporating activism into her artwork based on real life experiences regarding the opioid crisis.
“I grew up in a household and a community that was really deeply impacted by the opioid crisis my whole life,” Hause said in an interview. “I was starting to sort of see overlaps between the opioid crisis and the AIDS crisis that I had spent a lot of time reading about and I became interested in harm reduction and learning more about that kind of stuff.”
Outside of the Future Fair, Hause showcases work with Tomato Mouse, a non profit art gallery based in Ocean Hill, Brooklyn. The work she is showcasing at the fair is an extension of her focus on the opioid crisis–a multi-dispclinary project detailing the lives and experiences of mothers who have children or loved ones that have suffered from the crisis.
The first three pieces of Hause’s ongoing project is based on the story of a mother who lost her son to an overdose in 2015 and has since become an activist dedicated to spreading awareness and support to those impacted by the opioid crisis.
“I walked around her house with her, and she showed me objects around her home that were important to her and felt really connected to her loss and her circumstances that drove her to be involved in this movement” Hause said.
In a world where the art industry has become over-saturated, making it difficult for emerging artists to showcase their skills and voices, Future Fair NYC aims to create space for artists like Mause to push forth their unique perspectives.
“I'm a young artist who does not have a miles-long resume of gallery showings. And so opportunities to show work in a setting like a future fair does feel really unique and exciting to me,” Mause said.
Tickets for Future Fair NYC’s upcoming exhibition start at $35 and can be purchased using this link. The exhibition kicked off with VIP, invite only preview Wednesday, May 7th from 2 to 8 pm.
